5 Myths of Dermaplaning.
Its been a hot minute since my last blog post (I’m blaming the whole moving house thing) but this one is not to be missed…
Dermaplaning is a facial treatment where the skin surface is gently exfoliated with a surgical blade to remove dead skin cells and fine vellus hairs (peach fuzz) to reveal a fresh glowing complexion.
BUT you’ve been told a few stories form a friend of a friend of a friend who heard from Betty down the road that it makes you grow a beard! Well Betty, your information is incorrect! Today we are going to bust the five myths surrounding Dermaplaning…
1. Dermaplaning Will Cause Your Hair to Grow Back Darker!
You would be surprised how often I get asked this. This statement is completely false! Dermaplaning has no affect on the colour of your facial hairs. You can’t change the structure of the hair follicles by simply dermaplaning them off. In my experience, after dermaplaning your skin is much brighter and glowing so once the re-growth begins your eyes trick you into thinking that the hairs appear darker because you have become accustomed to seeing a brighter complexion.
2. Dermaplaning is Super Painful!
Dermaplaning is completely painless, in fact it’s a lot less painful than waxing, laser or threading. Light strokes are used across the top layer of the skin as a non abrasive form of exfoliation. It is suitable for most skin types, with the exception of those who suffer with acne. If you suffer with acne, then dermaplaning should be avoided as it can cause open wounds and transfer bacteria from the acne areas to the rest of the face.
3. Dermaplaning Will Cause Your Hair to Grow Back Thicker!
This myth always gets me, honestly how can removing fine peach fuzz hair cause it to suddenly grow thick like the hairs on your head?! During a dermaplaning treatment you are removing the hair at the skin surface, and not affecting the actual follicle. Your re-growth hairs will grow back with a blunt end, so you may feel as if the hair appears thicker but that is not the case. Once your hairs have fully grown back, your hairs will look and feel exactly the same as before.
4. Dermaplaning Will Cause Breakouts!
Okay, so this statement can be some what true but not to the extent that it makes out. Yes, some clients can experience a minor breakout 24-48 hours after dermaplaning but this is no more that a few whiteheads that will clear up as quickly as they came. Why can this happen? This can occur when a heavy build up is present in the pores and the skincare used during your treatment is working to push the nastiness to the skin surface in the form of whiteheads. Dermaplaning actually works in the opposite way, allowing skincare products to penetrate the skin further to prevent future breakouts from occurring.
5. You Can Use a Regular Razor to Dermaplane
You can use a regular razor to shave your face, but you won’t get the same affect as a professional treatment. A dermaplaning tool is a single sharp blade which allows the removal of dead skin cells as well as peach fuzz hairs, where as a regular razor is a multi blade tool designed for hair removal only.
I hope this has helped to clear up a few rumours you have heard surrounding dermaplaning. But the question is… Are you going to give it a go?
